Alnis Stakle (b.1975) is one of the leading Latvian photographers of his generation working across still life, self-portraiture, social documentary and landscape.
Stakle takes everyday life as his inspiration and subject matter, in this case the bleak and municipal elements of the city and how people live within their environments. The image for this edition is from Stakle’s LSD (Living Space Daugavpils) series of photographs that document Daugavpils, the second largest city in Latvia. The close proximity of the bordering countries of Russia, Belarus and Lithuania have determined the city as a unique cultural environment, a place that Stakle calls ‘trans-cultural.’
Alnis Stakle produced this edition for Modern Art Oxford to accompany his 2006 exhibition Flash Back, which was part of the Arrivals > Art from the New Europe project; a joint venture between Modern Art Oxford and Turner Contemporary to mark the 2004 enlargement of the European Union, the biggest in its history.
Exclusively made for Modern Art Oxford, our artist editions are often created to accompany a major exhibition in the galleries. Modern Art Oxford is a charity and all proceeds from the sale of these works directly support our exhibition and education programmes. All editions come with a certificate of authenticity.
