Internationally acclaimed artist Anish Kapoor (b.1954, Mumbai, India) generously created a new limited edition to accompany his exhibition at Modern Art Oxford, Painting (2nd October 2021 - 13th February 2022). This highly anticipated exhibition was the first major presentation in a UK public institution of new paintings by the celebrated artist. Painting gave audiences a rare insight into a relatively unknown area of Kapoor’s artistic work, and the opportunity to experience first-hand his powerful, large-scale paintings presented in dialogue with a related series of visceral sculptural works.
Drawing on the art historical theme of the subjugated and violated human body in the main exhibition, Kapoor’s edition is rare in being figurative in subject matter. It shows the arresting image of an amputated trunk of a quasi-sacrificial human form with a dramatic bulge of red blood. Influenced by a range of religious and cultural influences, Kapoor’s interest in the human body is both its artistic - especially painterly - representation in the history of art, but also as an experiential metaphor for creation, destruction and rebirth. As he says “The art I love, the art I make, I hope, celebrates the sensual while always knowing that decay is close.”
Exclusively made for Modern Art Oxford, our artist editions are often created to accompany a major exhibition in the galleries. Modern Art Oxford is a charity and all proceeds from the sale of these works directly support our exhibition and education programmes. All editions come with a certificate of authenticity.
