The work is one of the ‘Boksburg’ series that documents the characters and luminaries of the South African Boksburg mining province, which were taken across a two-year period between 1979-1980.  The ‘Boksburg’ series looked at the margins and suburbs of the town, where apartheid enforced rules that black people were only allowed into ‘white-only’ areas to travel on special occasions with a permit. Goldblattt said of Boksburg, ‘It held me. Literally for days on end, I stood riveted to street corners, parking lots and sidewalks.
