European exhibitions of art from Australia had usually divided work into separate categories of Aboriginal art and work produced in the Western art-historical tradition. This categorisation perpetuated the idea of separation and ignored the positive exchanges and influences shared by these two cultural histories. In Place (Out of Time) Contemporary Art in Australia presented a more inclusive approach, featuring the work of artists of both European descent and those descended from Aboriginal Australian's.
This book, and the exhibition it complemented, includes artists from diverse backgrounds, who work in a variety of different media and draw on a wide range of influences, cutting across the conventional divisions of Australian art. The work here focuses on issues such as aboriginality, ethnicity, sexuality, colonialism and landscape.
