Johanna Unzeuta is a New York based Chilean artist (b.1974). Combining elements from Chilean craft techniques, natural tinting processes and repetitive mechanised movement, Unzueta’s work explores labour’s technological, historical and social impact on the human condition, and its relationship to nature.
Unzueta’s edition for Modern Art Oxford was produced to accompany her 2020 exhibition Tools for Life which included a major new site-specific sculptural commission responding to the industrial heritage of the gallery spaces, wall drawings, video work and her signature abstract geometric drawings.
Unzueta hand-tints the paper for all of her drawings with natural dyes connected to the indigenous craft practices of Latin America. For her Modern Art Oxford edition Unzueta turned to the traditional crafts of the British Isles and created Nocturnal using two native plants, woad (isatis tinctoria) and madder (rubia tinctorum), to make the dyes, which were then applied to the paper in layers. The dyed paper has then been screenprinted with an original drawing based on the site-specific wall drawing Unzueta created for Modern Art Oxford’s Middle Gallery, also titled Nocturnal. The resulting series of works, available in green and blue, are each unique in colour and texture.
