Marina Abramović: Gates and Portals charts the pioneering performance artist’s life-long exploration of spiritual practice in relation to long durational performance, and the significance of portals and gates throughout history and cultures. The book was published on the occasion of her recent exhibition Gates and Portals at Modern Art Oxford, where the gallery becomes a site of passage that proposes the possibility of moving between different states of consciousness, with visitors themselves becoming the performers.
Abramović articulates the difference between a spiritual portal and a gate as follows: the gate is a structure that enables ‘the entrance from one world to another’ and the portal ‘transports you to a different state of consciousness’.
Co-designed by the artist, this fascinating book guides readers through the artist’s ‘private archaeology’ of artworks, cultural artefacts and anthropological writing exploring transitional states of being. It includes interviews with the artist and images of new works developed following a research residency at the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford in 2021, which informed the concept for her exhibition.
