The multifaceted practice of critically acclaimed Italian artist Monica Bonvicini (b. 1965) explores the relationship between architecture, power, gender, space, surveillance and control. Dry-humoured, direct, and imbued with historical, political and social references, Bonvicini’s art interrogates the site where it is exhibited, the materials that comprise it, and the roles of spectator and creator.
Bonvicini’s edition for Modern Art Oxford was produced to accompany her 2003 exhibition Anxiety Attack, which was the artist’s first solo show in the UK. Her edition is a still taken from Shotgun (2003), a 10-minute looped multi-channel DVD projection made from spliced and edited footage shot from a moving car in Los Angeles. The title of the piece is drawn from the soundtrack.
