Fascinated by his family’s Viennese and Russian-Jewish heritage, Kitaj introduced self-analysis and Judeo-Christian mysticism into his art practice. Although he was an American, Kitaj was, alongside artists including Frank Auerbach, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, David Hockney and Howard Hodgkin, part of the School of London, a term Kitaj himself coined in an essay for a 1976 exhibition of figurative and drawing works selected by Kitaj from the Arts Council of Great Britain collection.

This edition by Kitaj is a portrait of an unknown sitter called Mary Ann and was generously created by the artist to support the Museum of Modern Art Oxford’s Building Appeal in the early 1980s. Kitaj, along with Howard Hodgkin and John Piper, donated a work which was then produced in an exclusive and limited edition of 150 each.

Exclusively made for Modern Art Oxford, our artist editions are often created to accompany a major exhibition in the galleries.
