Since the mid-1960s, Stephen Willats has embarked on an investigation into the relationship between art and society, between artwork and viewer, and between artist and art institution. This catalogue was published on the occasion of the exhibition Conscious – Unconscious: in and out the reality check by Stephen Willats at Modern Art Oxford in 2013.
The show consisted of a large dynamic mural work, an environmental datastream installation, photographic and text wall‐based works and a series of new drawings centering on flows of ideas and data. The catalogue includes a foreword by exhibition curator Paul Luckraft, a discussion of the work between Ute Meta Bauer and Stephen Willats and a translation of The Artist as Instigator by Astrid Wege. Printed in an edition of 500.
